Research

2006-2007

"Sakai Course Management System Implementation"
As a research assistant under Karen Lunsford of UCSB, I worked as part of team conisting of computer scientists, writing professors and writing researchers to user test and implement the Sakai CMS at UCSB. This research is dedicated to seeking out best practices for uses of a CMS such as Sakai in general writing courses, and specifically in engineering technical communication courses.

2005

"LEMMA Learning Environment with Multi-Media Augmentation"
Working with Tobias Hollerer of UCSB's Computer Science Department and Marc Breisinger of the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, Germany, we developed and tested a software tutorial for UCSB physics students; this was the first tutorial ever created for Fogscreen technology. The project specifically tested how users of enhanced reality environments represent their conceptual understanding of the abstract in 2D.

2005-04

"Patterns in First-Year Writing and Teacher Response"
In this project, I worked as a research assistant to Andrea Lunsford of Stanford University and Karen J. Lunsford of UCSB on a project that sought to identify patterns of error and teachers' responses to error in first-year student writing.

Spring 2005

"Engineering Major Retention Study"
This research investigated possible reasons for the increasing dropout rate amongst first year students of engineering at UCSB. This work was conducted under Writing Program Chair, Sue McLeod. Specifically, I conducted interviews with subjects, participated in a group presentation to the Associate Chair of the engineering department, and wrote portions of the final report.

2001

"A Supplemental Guidebook for 1301 Students"
Under the supervision of Professors Sam Dragga and Rebecca Rickly, this project was a collaborative work written by students in two of my Essentials of College Rhetoric courses. The purpose of the end product was to give incoming students to the course a guidebook to supplement the current text. It also allowed my students to produce an important piece of writing that would be used by their peers in future composition courses.

2001

"The Shell Report 2000:Manipulating Readers With Rhetorical Artillery"
Under the supervision of Professor Ken Baake, I analyzed annual reports from The Shell Oil Company. I used Aristotelian categories of topics as my tools of analysis and found that the report used epideictic, forensic, and deliberative rhetorical strategies in attempts to influence their audience.
